Warning: It is only from a sense of compulsion that I am writing this articles. Hollywood is rotten to the core and I’m sure 90% of our reader base has long since stopped believing that the media produces anything but fake news. But here we go again.
Many news sites have been reporting that the dreaded gender pay gap has struck again. The details of this lie are that Michelle Williams was only paid only $1,000 for a role while Mark Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million. Now on the face of it this appears unfair. But take a look at the details and you’ll see the media can only lie these days and more often than not the narrative of the lie is “Bad men, helpless women”. I assert to you, the intelligent reader, that this narrative is bad for men and women and is predicated on the idea that consumers of media are so dumb that they won’t pick up on the lie.
The movie All the Money in the World had to have certain scenes re-shot because Kevin Spacey was being replaced with Christopher Plummer. Maybe this was because of Kevin Spacey’s actions, maybe because of virtue signalling and the increased media coverage this stunt would generate. We’ll never know. All the actors, crew, directors etc had to be reassembled to facilitate the maneuver. This means the possibility of a cost blow out but to quote the director, Ridley Scott from an interview with USA Today:
Scott “The whole re-shoot was – in normal terms was expensive but not as expensive as you think. Because all of them, everyone did it for nothing”
Interviewer “You didn’t pay the actors more to do it”
Scott “No, they all came in free. Christopher had to get paid. But Michelle, no. Me, no.”
That’s right, the actors agreed to get paid nothing to do the work. They didn’t want to get paid!! Michelle Williams herself has said. “I said I’d be wherever they needed me, whenever they needed me. And they could have my salary, they could have my holiday, whatever they wanted. Because I appreciated so much that they were making this massive effort”. The money she did get was a per diem that is require by law to be paid.
Now it would appear that Wahlberg is a bit of a hard bastard and wouldn’t do the re-shoot for less than $1.5m (note that Wahlberg is the highest paid actor in the world right now). Make of that what you will. But please consider that comparing a male who bargained hard to get as much money as he could to a female who agree to work for free is and calling it sexism is, quite simply, dishonest.
How can we save a poor little damsel, who is in fact a Hollywood actress and hardly a 99%er, when she agrees to work for free? How can we condemn either Mr Wahlberg or the producers of the movie for negotiating a contract to re-shoot a movie that both parties seem willing to sign?
Sexism is a trope, the pay gap is a myth and satire is dead.
